BUILD YOUR DREAM BUSINESS

with your Priorities in Mind

Yes it’s true that you shouldn’t let anyone or anything stop you from pursuing your dream business, BUT you also have to make sure that pursuing your dream business is not going to cost you your marriage, family, and other things important to you.

THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE.

They build their dream business without considering their priorities.

WHAT YOU’LL READ IN THIS POST is something you will rarely find in any ‘teaching’ about “having a successful business.”

Every step I’m going to share with you is something you can immediately apply to your dream business.

Step 1

Visualize yourself having your dream business … like you already have it.

Visualize yourself in action … operating the business. Imagine yourself in your office or shop … imagine yourself with your customers … imagine yourself being recognized by the people around you. Imagine yourself meeting with big people.

Step 2

Write down your goals in relation to your vision, or what you imagined.

Examples:
  • Attend an online class on business.
  • Start building my network by joining groups.
  • Finish my business plan in three months.
  • Start saving money.

Step 3

Write down everything and everyone that you consider highly important in your life. Include activities. This is your priority list.

Step 4

How will your goals affect your priority list? This is where the adjustments should take place.

Examples:
  • Attend a business class
    • More time is needed for this that may take time away from spouse and/or children.
    • Adjustment: take an online course that allows greater flexibility

  • Start building my network by joining groups
    • This will affect my weekly time with friends.
    • Adjustment: Limit time with friends.

  • Finish my business plan in three months.
    • This will affect my time with spouse and kids.
    • Adjustment
      • Commit to a certain number of hours a day or a week to work on the plan.
      • Extend the duration.

  • Start saving money for business.
    • This will affect vacations with spouse and family.
    • Adjustment
      • Limit vacations.
      • Find cheaper ways to spend time with spouse and family.
      • Consider a business loan.

Step 5

How will your priority list affect your goals? What will the adjustments be?

This is different from the previous step in the sense that you’re now looking at your priority list and which ones can hinder you from fulfilling your goals.

There are certain people, things, and activities that you can take out of your priority list, if they will just be a hindrance.

You can probably give up some of your activities or even cut off certain people from your life that are not really benefitting you.

But then there are the ‘non-negotiables’ like your marriage and children. These are the ones you can’t and should not get rid of, even if they don’t fit in your vision of a dream business.

If your spouse, for instance, is going to be a hindrance to your dream business, what can you modify? Perhaps talking to him or her and explaining your plans more clearly will help. Ask your spouse what the hold-up is. Bring all the issues out.

I had a client who thought that his wife was just unsupportive of his vision for the business. After going back and forth on it, the truth came out. It’s not that she didn’t want him to start the business. She was worried about their financial situation. He later figured out that for as long as he is bringing his share of income, his wife is okay. He then built his business slowly but surely, while still maintaining a job.

When you know what the problem is, you can find a solution.

YOUR GOALS SHOULD ALWAYS BE ALIGNED WITH YOUR PRIORITIES.

When you set your priorities straight at the beginning of pursuing your dream business and make sure that your goals are aligned with it, you will achieve great success.

In the first place, success without peace and joy is not success at all.
