It is not the kind of shift where you see big businesses booming. It is the kind of shift where you see the unassuming, home-based businesses, small businesses, and solopreneurs multiplying. These are the types of businesses that will not only keep the economy running, but will set the trend for the new normal in business.
With companies downsizing and even closing down, more and more people are not only losing their jobs but finding almost no jobs available for them. Even the businesses that were considered crisis-proof are now suffering from the unexpected turn of events.
Just from my encounters with clients alone, both from my career and business coaching, there has been a major shift in the minds of people. More Americans are rethinking their careers and considering having a side business, home-based business, or family business, whether for themselves or other family members. A recent client actually started a coaching business during this pandemic. Other clients who are on their last few years prior to retirement are calculating their moves wisely, which includes business planning. Then, there are those entrepreneurs who have not set up their businesses to adapt to the new normal, and are now restructuring their companies to make it more flexible.
Change is not always easy. Yet, when we are forced to, we become more adaptable to it. My mom, who didn't want to use any social media platforms had no choice but to join us on Facebook so she could talk to all her kids and grand kids during the lock down.
Social media, video conferencing, digital marketing, and similar platforms and technology are on the rise. This is not going to change but will just continue to populate our economy. This is now the new normal, whether we like it or not.
The good news is: OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND and GROWTH IS LIMITLESS.
You can set up a business by yourself and outsource your workers who are all tech-savvy. Call centers and other companies have been doing this for years. This has now expanded to marketing, human resources, real estate, and all other positions and fields imaginable. And, if you have Millennials or Gen Zs in your family, you can utilize their skills and get them to work.
There are countless possibilities for you and your family. This is even a great time to sit down with them and brainstorm. If you have a desire to start a business, you don't have to quit your job yet. It takes time to build, and now is the best time to start. If you've been planning to have a business but are unsure or scared, I encourage you to pursue that dream. If you have a business and you suffered during this crisis, I encourage you to rethink your business. If you've been thinking of having your own business but didn't have the time for it because of your job, and now you don't have a job, what are you waiting for?
I want to see more solopreneurs and entrepreneurs because this is what our country needs right now. As companies downsize and close, we need more creative, driven, and passionate people to start their businesses and make the economy healthy again.
