Work-Life Balance? Who doesn't want that? And yet, it is easier said than done.
I will never forget a conversation I had many years ago with a client. I was a single mom then, working very hard to provide well for my boys. Here's how the conversation went.
Client: You should give yourself a break so you can spend more time with your sons. Me: How I wish I can do that. Client: Of course you can. You just have to make up your mind and do it. Me: (Just in my thoughts) Easy for you to say. You have a rich husband and you have a huge, prosperous company.
I just smiled at her and left it at that.
Most of the time, we don't really see where people are. She probably had no clue how it was like to be in my shoes. Looking back, she was right though. I simply had to make up my mind. However, making up your mind is just the beginning of a process that requires steps that will get you to that place successfully.
Many people work so hard to achieve this balance only to lose everything they've worked hard for in the end. In a way, I was one of those people. I wanted to give my children the best future I can give them by working so hard, depriving them of what they badly needed at that time ... a parent who was present. How I wish I did things differently. I am just thanking God that they came out more than okay.
So, how do you achieve this work-life balance successfully?
How do you prepare for it without hurting those you love? Do you just downgrade your lifestyle to spend more time with your family? Do you just give up on your dreams to have a bigger house or a vacation house somewhere else?
Well, the answer differs for each situation. However, one step that applies to everyone is PLANNING WISELY. This requires discipline and commitment. From where you are to where you want to be is what you need to plan for.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself. 1️⃣ What is your vision of a work-life balance? How does it look like? 2️⃣ What does it need for you to get there? What do you need to do? How much is it going to cost? 3️⃣ How is this going to affect those you love? Is it going to take time away from them? 4️⃣ How is this going to affect your overall well-being?
These questions will help you determine what you need to START DOING, what you need to STOP DOING, what you need to CONTINUE DOING, and what you need to DO DIFFERENTLY.
With me, my vision of a work-life balance requires me to transition my business to something more laid back, but which will bring in more income for me. This is not going to happen overnight, but I am working towards it. There are sacrifices I need to make, but not at the expense of my marriage and family. They are my priority, as I've learned my lesson the hard way.
